About FinTech Essential

Our Mission

FinTech Essential provides independent, evidence-based coverage of financial technology and insurance for consumers and small businesses. We test products, question vendor claims, and make clear recommendations.

We exist because most fintech coverage is compromised by affiliate relationships. When a review site earns a commission every time you click a link, the incentive is to recommend — not to be honest. We chose a different model.

How We're Funded

This site is funded entirely by advertising through Google AdSense. We acquire readers through search advertising on Microsoft Bing. We do not use affiliate links. We do not accept sponsored content. We do not earn commissions from any product mentioned on this site.

This means our editorial team has no financial incentive to recommend one product over another. When we say a product is the best choice, it's because we believe it — not because someone is paying us to say it.

Our Editorial Approach

We use three distinct editorial voices across our content:

  • The Opinionated Editor — takes clear positions, names winners, backs up recommendations with evidence. Used for most of our guides and comparison articles.
  • The Investigative Reporter — questions narratives, follows the evidence, and connects dots. Used for industry analysis and explainer content.
  • The Sceptical Reviewer — adopts a consumer advocacy stance, testing vendor claims against real-world performance. Used for product reviews.

Across all content, we avoid hedging without explanation, affiliate-style language, and generic "it depends" conclusions. If we don't have a clear recommendation, we'll tell you why — not hide behind vagueness.

What We Cover

Our coverage spans six areas: consumer money apps (budgeting, payments, banking, BNPL), business finance software (accounting, invoicing, payment processing), insurance (insurtech reviews, pet insurance, business insurance, consumer guides), AI in finance, fintech regulation and consumer rights, and industry analysis.

We do not cover cryptocurrency, blockchain, DeFi, NFTs, or Web3. We do not cover health insurance. These exclusions are deliberate editorial choices, not oversights.

Our Audience

We write for US consumers and small business owners making decisions about financial technology products and insurance. Our secondary audience includes UK consumers for banking, payments, and insurance content. We respect our readers' time and expertise — our content is substantive and direct.
